Are you on track to get $521 from the government?
Wouldn’t it be great to get an extra $521 into your KiwiSaver?
That’s how much you stand to gain from paying enough into your KiwiSaver account to gain the full government contribution each year.
How does it work?
Put a dollar into KiwiSaver and the government matches it with 50 cents – up to $521 every year.
To get the full amount, you need to be at least 18 and contributing at least $1,043 each year between 1 July and 30 June. That’s just a bit more than $20 a week.
If you haven’t been putting in that much, you can top up your KiwiSaver account before the end of June each year to get the full government match. Contact your provider to make arrangements.
Even if you don’t put in the full $1,043, you still get the government’s matching 50 cents for every dollar you put in.
Remember, all the money you and the government put into your KiwiSaver account is for you when you retire or to use towards buying your first home. The sooner you start contributing, and the more you add, the more you’ll have when you need it.
How do you know if you have contributed enough?
You’ll automatically get the maximum government contribution if you’ve been a KiwiSaver member for the full year (from 1 July to 30 June), aged 18-65 and the following apply:
-
You’re employed
- You earn at least $34,762 per year
-
You contribute at least 3% to KiwiSaver
OR if you’ve been contributing more than $20 a week, on average, for the full year (from 1 July to 30 June).
OR if you’ve made one or more lump-sum contributions totalling at least $1,043 between 1 July and 30 June.
What if you haven’t contributed enough?
If it doesn’t look like you’ll contribute at least $1,043 to your KiwiSaver account by 30 June this year, you can make a lump sum contribution or set up a regular payment before then to make up the difference.
